ABOUT 
VIGINIA HOUSING
DEVELOPMENT

1939

ARHA was established in 1939 with a mission to provide safe, decent housing for low-income residents.

 

1989

ARHA awarded one of the nation’s first LIHTC allocations to construct Quaker Hill.

 

1991

Quaker Hill community placed in service

 

2005

Chatham Square replaces the former Samuel Madden public housing site.

  • Construction completed on South Whiting Street community

  • 6 new Braddock Road townhomes completed

  • 18-unit South Reynolds Street development completed​​

 

2008

A second allocation of LIHTCs supported the redevelopment of Quaker Hill.

  • Redevelopment of Alexandria Crossing at Old Dominion completed

 

2010

VHD established to create a method for securing multi-tiered financing for affordable housing developments [bold]  

  • Alexandria Crossing at West Glebe completed.

  • Quaker Hill repositioning completed​

 

2012

Acquisition and rehabilitation of Pendleton Park completed.

 

2014

Redevelopment of Old Town Commons completed

 

2021

The Lineage redevelopment completed

Established in 2010, VHD works to create new and enhance existing affordable housing in Alexandria, Va. by leveraging a variety of available financing tools. VHD’s innovative model has supported the development of mixed-income residential projects to foster inclusive, sustainable and stable communities.
